Michael Gerber’s best-selling book, E-myth, introduced the entrepreneurial world to a different perspective on how business owners can think about their role in their own business – they could either be a technician, manager or CEO.

In other words, using a different way of thinking could create a whole different type of business (one that actually gives you freedom) – without having to do more work.

By the way, if you haven’t read the E-Myth yet, then I highly suggest you do – soon!!

So based on the E-myth principles, which are you – a technician, manager or CEO??

Let’s take the example of a lawyer who is the founder of their own business. Initially, the owner does everything including all the legal work, administrative, financial, operations and cleaning the toilets. They are a true technician.

But as the business grows, the lawyer hires someone to take care of administration, finance and operations but they are still the main technician – the one doing the legal work. At this stage, they’ve probably graduated to manager i.e. managing a small team and being the lawyer. At this stage of business growth, the lawyer feels trapped by the day-to-day grind and can never seem to increase the business revenue despite working long hard hours. There is no freedom.

The next stage of business growth is where the owner finally steps into the role of CEO and leads the business. But what has to happen first – there needs to be a consistent stream of incoming clients and sales so that the CEO can hire more lawyers to do the legal work.

Once a rockstar team is built and is supported by systems and processes, then the CEO can focus solely on leading the business and staying in their zone of genius while delegating everything else.

So my friend…

Are you focused mainly on performing legal activities like a technician?

Or are you focused on managing people like a manager?

Or are you a big-picture thinker and leader like a CEO?

If you are spending the majority of your time as a technician, it’s unlikely that you’ll grow your business past your hourly capability. In the role of technician, doing more work and working longer hours may give you more sales/revenue but you will soon discover that you have a business that does NOT give you the freedom or flexibility that you desire.

So how does a business owner, an expert such as a lawyer, real estate investor, or other professional, actually grow their business past being a technician so that they can achieve freedom?

It requires a different way of thinking and that’s what I share in this week’s episode of Work Less PROFIT More business podcast. If you are someone who wants to grow and scale your business past the level of where you are currently, then listen to this episode where I share how to evolve from solopreneur thinking and true business builder thinking!
