Last week I travelled to Kingston to hear renowned coach Bobby Umar speak at a networking event. I wanted to share his insights on 3 skills for small business owners to master.
1. Master Your Mindset
Our beliefs are the basis of how we operate. We operate daily and make decisions based on our beliefs. (Definition of mindset….A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person’s responses to and interpretations of situations. An inclination or a habit.) Our beliefs can impact our business decisions, especially when it comes to comes to money. I’ve talked about this frequently and have hosted a webinar on Mastering Your Money Game! You can have the best marketing message, and the best product but if your money mindset isn’t in balance — you won’t grow! Ask yourself how you might be unconsciously sabotaging your business — do you hate talking about money; do you have your money well organized; do you hesitate asking for money; when was the last time you raised your fees; does it make you uncomfortable to have sales conversations? Most small business owners face mindset roadblocks — I know I have!
2. Master your support
Bobby Umar noted that every entrepreneur needs skills, tools, strategies, resources and people. This is what he called ‘support’. Are you missing some skills? What types of tools are you using to make your business operate seamlessly? What resources do you use? Do you have the right type of people supporting you (staff, mentor, coach)? If Bill Gates thinks that everyone needs a coach, then I agree! Do you have a coach?
3. Master your plan
Every business needs focus, accountability and a road map so that they can adapt, evolve, grow and prosper! We all need a profit plan — how are we going to make the $$$ so that you can have the impact and influence we desire! Do you know how many of each of your products or programs you will have to sell in 2017 to meet the BIG GOALS you’ve set for yourself? What are you going to do differently in 2017 or is 2017 going to be a clone of this past year?
Each year, I make time to plan not only with my clients but also for myself. I call it my BEST-YEAR-YET plan. Often I offer a workshop based on the same techniques I use to plan my coming year. This year, I was so busy with events and my book launch that originally I had decided not to offer a workshop.
BUT I CHANGED MY MIND …. January 16, I’m going to spend the day planning my year and I’m inviting you into my office to plan with me! Let’s do this together — virtually! You won’t even have to get out of your pjs or into your car! Then on January 23, we’ll get back on Zoom and we talk about your plan and how to make it better. You see … I want you to have your BEST-YEAR-YET whether it means making $500, $5,000 or $50,000 per month!!!
I can almost hear you saying …. but I HATE planning. I don’t like planning. It’s too rigid. I’ve done this before and it hasn’t worked! Believe me, I’ve heard it all but planning can be fun. Planning does work — it’s just not set in stone!!!
