Like all things that transform, businesses evolve through stages of growth. After a recent discussion with a group of women entrepreneurs, we explored some key questions around growth including:

  • What keeps businesses stuck in certain phases?
  • What helps them evolve with ease?
  • Why do some businesses progress faster than others?

I want to share insights on these growth stages and how to move through them with less frustration and more ease.

The Four Stages of Business Growth

1.  Emerge

In the beginning, solopreneurs spend the majority of their time and energy testing and validating everything including offers, marketing, and pricing. Revenue is inconsistent, sometimes not even covering expenses. But with persistence and refinement, businesses gain traction and shift into the Growth phase.

2.  Growth

Here, business owners chase more sales and revenue. Many fall into the “myth of more,” believing working harder equals greater success. However, true growth requires shifting from a Chief Everything Officer to a CEO who delegates, strategizes, and leads. Without this transformation, they risk staying stuck in the “growth trap” and never truly realize their full potential.

3.  Freedom

This phase is about achieving the flexibility and freedom originally envisioned by the business founder. The business operates efficiently with systems, automation, and a team, allowing the owner to step back and enjoy financial and time freedom. Scaling may happen here, but more importantly, the business can thrive without daily hands-on involvement. In this stage, there is more than enough cash flow to re-invest in the business and pay the founder better than fair-market salary.

4.  Legacy

Few businesses reach this phase. Here, owners establish a lasting impact—through diversification, philanthropy, or an exit strategy. A strong revenue model is essential before this step.

Where Are You Now?

Which stage best describes your business? Do you want to stay there, or are you ready to move forward?

Here are Three Keys to moving through Growth Stages with more ease and less frustration

  1. Mentorship & Coaching

It goes without saying that successful people—Oprah, and Olympic athletes—all have coaches. A mentor challenges you to step outside your comfort zone and grow faster. I’ve always had a coach and still do. I would still be stuck as a Chief Everything Officer without coaching.

  1. Quarterly Planning

Without a plan, you’re winging it – wasting time throwing spaghetti at the wall. A quarterly plan helps you track progress, adapt to market changes, and double down on what works. Every 90 days, I host a Quarterly Business Freedom Planning Day (QBFPD)—a chance to map out your next action steps, and uplevel CEO habits.

  1. Community

Masterminding with like-minded entrepreneurs provides insight, accountability, and motivation. This is why our QBFPD is so powerful!.

While QBFPD is free for my private clients, you are invited to join us and experience these benefits!
